Christmas Tree

This is my Christmas tree this year. Its at my moms house this year since I'm slowly migrating myself over there from where i live now . She also has a working fireplace so for the first time in years we will be having a real Christmas. I would be more excited about it but it seems the older I get the more people hate the holidays and become more grumpy then usual lol.

If you posted your tree on your blog link me up I'd love to take a look.
What is your favorite part of the holidays?
Mine is wrapping and buying gifts lol I sometimes volunteer myself to wrap gifts for other people since i enjoy it so much .

The Great Food Blogger Cookie swap with recipe

The Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap

When i found out about this swap i was soo excited to join. We got our 3 partners and have all sent our cookies out to each other so now its time to share my recipe . First though if you want to sign up next year you can go here to sign up for the newsletter .

I decided to go with a cookie that i could decorate since that's one of my favorite parts so i decided to do a gingerbread shortbread cookie. These came out so yummy and made the house smell amazing .

Here is the recipe

Gingerbread Shortbread Cookies:
Preheat over to 375

4 cups of all purpose flour
1/2 cup of white sugar
4 sticks of unsalted butter
2 tbsp of molasses
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp cloves

In a large bowl mix together all your dry ingredients set aside , make sure the butter has softned just a little then in a mixer beat butter sugar and molasses . Add dry mixture cup by cup and beat in the mixture on slow increasing to medium speed toward the end.

These are roll out cookies but do not flour your work space and roll them out the dough should be just dry enough to roll between 2 pieces of parchment or wax paper.
Cut out your desired shapes and bake them on parchment lined baked sheets about 15-17 min depending on your oven they should be a light golden brown color .

Let cool overnight before decorating. I used royal icing to decorate them but you can use butter cream if your more comfortable working with that . You can find loads of royal icing recipes online to use my best advice is to make sure you have meringue powder.
Decorate and let your icing dry overnight and then its time to serve your cookies!
If you have any questions about the recipe feel free to leave a comment and I'll get back to you.

I would like to thank my swap partners for the yummy cookies i received and the people who hosted this swap it was so much fun to take part in .

Pies Pies Pies

Hey everyone so it's been awhile since i have posted anything so first I want to address that. If you have been watching the news last month you saw all the stuff on about hurricane Sandy . Well we lost our power for 11 days and had no cell service for about 5 of those. My uncle who lives here at my moms house also was one of the victims of the storm and it was a hard time trying to plan a funeral arrangements without power or phones. It took awhile for us all to get back into out regular routines and between that and getting out of a 4 year relationship I haven't been in the mood for any blogging.

I really want to start again and will try and post as much as i can this month but It's going to be a super busy time for me lots of baking for parties and gifts and some orders. So on a lighter note lets move onto pies!

The first pie of the fall season i made was this apple pie , i made from the apples we got when we went apple picking . I also made another pie with cookie crumb made from my shortbread cookies but I ended up making the pie during the storm at my moms friends house and never got a picture of it but I will have to share the recipe soon since it came out so yummy!

For Thanksgiving I made a pecan pie because its my favorite of all pies.
I call this the 5lb pecan pie i used about 3 bags of pecans in it. I have a really big pet peeve about most pecan pies and that is they only have a layer of pecans on the top. Meaning your eating a fork full of sugar glaze syrup with a pecan or two thrown in. This pie is full of calories so i recommend making it about once a year but it was amazing. I also topped it with caramel .

Here's a look inside the pie at all the pecans lol

I hope everyone is doing well and having a great start to the holiday season.
Feel free to leave me a comment and let me know what kind of pies you have made or are planning to make for the holiday season?

Are you afraid of the dark :The Devils Tower

A few weeks back my friend and I went to check out a local haunt called the devils tower in alpine NJ . There aren't to many places that are spooky in or around Bergen county so this was the closest thing we found. The area is really nice lots of mansions and smack dab in the middle of the mansions is the tower. Legend is a Spanish man who made his money from a sugar plantation in Cuba built it for his wife so she had a view of New York City. While the tower was being built she went up to take a look around and supposedly saw him having an affair and threw herself to her death off the tower. Upon arriving my friend said she was getting a creepy feeling and when we pulled up this tower was immense . All I could think of was how crazy it would be to fall off that tower. It is securely gated and also has a video surveillance so know one can get it. I read online if you drive around it 3 times backwards your suppose to see his wife's ghost but since my friend had just got a new car i figured that wasn't a smart move to try lol.
I snapped some pictures and It wasn't until a few days later when i uploaded them that i noticed something in the window of one of the pictures. I'm not a camera expert so I really don't know what it could be but was it the ghost of his wife looking back at us.
Here are the two photos the image only appears to come up in the one photo.
I did not edit these except for the size and added the circle so you know what window i was talking about so these are as is, you be the judge.

Lets start with the invites I custom ordered these invites from tickled peach studio and they came out perfect exactly what I wanted .She does such great work i recommend her if your looking for invites. I forgot to print extra so I'm posting the file she sent me .
Onto the dessert table I made matching cookies and cupcakes for the theme, i really wish i could have gotten better pictures I need a nicer camera.

Tis the season for apple picking

Since fall weather has showed up I have been dying to go apple picking its one of my favorite things to do this time of the year. It was perfect weather yesterday as well so beautiful and sunny out. We had such a fun day ,also a day of food as well we picked up candy apples, apple cider donuts and yummy chocolates as well . My friend Sarah decided to climb a tree to get to the green apples which were scarce and that was unsuccessful. It seemed everyone has gutted out the green apples before we got there. But i got enough to make a yummy pie I cant wait to post the recipe for that . I'll be working on that next week.

We went to Maskers Orchards in Warwick NY, I am in love with this place next year I'll be going back. It is one of the largest orchards Ive ever seen and its also up on a mountain so the view is breathtaking. They even have cute little sign names for the different roads.

If you have a a truck or SUV i would recommend taking it because the roads are crazy and a little off road style lol .
Has anyone else gone apple picking this year yet?

Choux Pasry cream puffs recipe

I promised i would post this recipe and finally here it is lol. This is part of my adventures in french pastries. I plan on doing every recipe i can one by one in my free time and teach myself the art of french baking I'll be posting each time i make something. This is the basic recipe for the choux pastry. These were very easy to make . Its kind of daunting when it comes to dough and cooking it on the stove but i was surprised at how easy these were.
Dough recipe:
1 cup of cake flour
1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp whole milk
1 cup plus 1 tbsp of water
1 tbsp of white sugar
1 pinch of salt
6 tbsp of unsalted butter
4 eggs
1 tbsp vanilla bean paste
In a medium sized pot add milk ,water, sugar, vanilla, and salt . Bring to a boil then take off the stove and add flour mix well.
put the pot back on the stove on low stir continuously for 1 one till the batter all comes together and away from the sides
pour into a bowl (plastic will help it cool faster) add eggs one at a time and mix together
Transfer to a pastry or icing bag and pipe into circles you can make large or small depending on what you would like . Pipe onto buttered baking sheet
preheat oven to 350
bake for 10 min or till light golden brown see picture above
I made a whip cream filling I'm more partial to this then the more custard like fillings you normally find.
1 cup of heavy whipping cream
2 tbsp of confection sugar you can add more if you like it more sweet
1 tsp vanilla
In a bowl or mixer fitted with the whisk attachment beat heavy cream, sugar and vanilla on high till it forms thick peaks.
Add in pastry/icing bag with a large round tip you can either slice it in half and pipe in between like i did or poke a hold underneath your puff and fill cream from there.
You can sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve

Georgetown Cupcakes NYC Review

I always love to try new cupcake places and since i had seen the show I had wanted to try Georgetown Cupcakes for awhile .
They opened a location in NYC in Soho. I happened to check out the channel 7 secret sales and they had a coupon for half off of a dozen cupcakes so i quickly jumped online and placed my order for pickup that Saturday. I rounded up my friend Sarah and my mom and went to pick them up Saturday. I had completely forgot it was fashion week so Soho was very crowded.
I actually was able to snap two pictures while inside without a problem some places don't allowed that.
They has this fun cupcake art on the wall

I also saw this fun pinup street art on the walk back

I got them home and over the next 3 days my mom and I tried the different flavors we got.

Here is a review of the flavors we got
Vanilla and chocolate- this one is the vanilla with chocolate frosting the cake part was fine but when i bit into the chocolate part i actually wanted to spit it out that's never happened with a cupcake before lol . I didn't know till after i ate it that its made with callebaut chocolate which to me tastes like a dark bitter chocolate which i don't like.

Coconut - It said it was a coconut cake but it tasted like vanilla to me and I didn't really enjoy the frosting overall it was an okay cupcake.

Chocolate and vanilla- I'm confused here the chocolate cake part was good and the frosting is suppose to be vanilla but it was cream cheese when i tasted it overall it was another okay one

Vanilla Birthday cake- The cake part was okay and i really like the constancy of the the frosting but the vanilla tasted like it has been mixed with one of the fruit flavored frosting and I didn't like the taste.

Chocolate Peanut butter swirl- This was the best one out of the batch it was really good the frosting was perfect and there was a delicious chocolate filling inside as well.

Overall I would like to go back and try different flavors before i count them out for good. But i do take it a bad sign that the basic flavors were not that great.

This review was done on my own and paid for me and has no affiliation with Georgetown Cupcakes
